What is STEMEd+ Commons?
STEMEd+ Commons is a new digital commons advancing open scholarship for STEM education research and practice . STEMEd+ Commons seeks to transform of the research enterprise to embrace an “ours, not mine” view of research, expertise, resources, and power – collaboration as a norm rather than competition. Housed under the umbrella of the Knowledge Commons – an academy-owned and governed, open access, and open source system – STEMEd+ Commons provides a space for the global STEM education research community to collaborate, share, and create cutting-edge research and innovative pedagogy – a space that does not and will not monetize users’ intellectual and personal data. Users can build profiles, join scholar-practitioner communities, share scholarship, publish materials, and search a repository for articles, multimedia, datasets, and more. Upcoming functionality will also allow journals to publish, review, and curate their collections. STEMEd+ Commons adheres to TRUST, FAIR, and CARE principles in its design.
STEMEd+ Commons offers multiple open science affordances, including (1) Profiles, a system allowing users to easily find and connect with each other; (2) the STEMEd+ Commons Collection built in KC Works, a top-of-class research data management platform built on CERN’s InvenioRDM, offering an open-access repository allowing diverse product sharing – data sets, scholarly articles, presentations, curricula, white papers, videos, and more – with notification to other members; (3) Groups, a community platform, permitting members to share ideas and discuss common interests and serving as an archivable listserv; and (4) Sites, a publishing platform, enabling the creation of books, journals, and more, with built in peer feedback systems.

STEMEd+ Commons Sustainability
STEMEd+ Commons is an NSF-funded (OAC-2226271, DRL-2321946, OAC-2531819), open invitation commons offering an open-access network for diverse communities to transform global knowledge systems. Users connect to share their research/practice to an open repository, develop discussion groups and listservs, build websites, and foster a digital presence. STEMEd+ Commons seeks to build mechanisms for the STEM education research and practice communities – with STEM very broadly defined – to build new arrangements for knowledge production, cross-disciplinary sharing, and research-to-practice innovations. STEMEd+ Commons long-term sustainability and advantages over independently built systems emerge from its use of Knowledge Commons as a “Software as a Service” platform alongside the Modern Language Association, the Association of University Presses, and major universities, as well as donors including Digital Scholar. By design, STEMEd+ is free to access by any user, anywhere.
